The dunes lay formless and empty. Dust howled in the darkness on the surface of Terra.
The planet formerly known as Earth skated about her axis, gliding through the void in silent orbit around the First System.
She drifted through stardust, her wake a faint trail of ancient debris and stale ash. Her shadow passed over muted processions of abandoned starcruisers, haunting among the suspended ruin of failed colonies and dried-up fuel depots.
Sol burned in place, some ninety million miles away, doing a solid impression of a fixed point despite sailing blind through space along with everything else. Desperate to reconnect with any of his children, he exerted control over the little planet, constantly reaching out, starved for contact, impact, union of any kind. His impotent flames churned in anticipation, fuming impatiently for their long-fated solar-flared embrace.
Yet she spun nonchalant at the edge of attraction in constant pirouette, sporting a playful axial tilt, turning and turning toward Sol as if to ask for a dance, as if to sigh, to smile and say, let there be light…
